You know that shop? The one you go to just to smell the scented air and look at the beautiful things? In Nelson Bay, Entice U on Stockton Street is such an emporium.
When we walked in we were greeted by two women arranging enormous, decorated lampshades that had just arrived. The white one embroidered with toucans caught my eye and was duly put in the window display. Looking around, I felt an excitement similar to scouring for sea shells on the beach!
Quirky, colourful, and different is the theme here. The owner, Sandra, tells me the shop has been open for nineteen years and sources an eclectic range of handcrafted jewellery, gifts, homewares, clothing, accessories and odd extras. “We try to be quirky and colourful,” she says. Many items are fair trade, like the cashmere scarves from Nepal.
“A lot of things are fair trade. I wouldn’t say everything in the shop, but we try to, more and more, because I think everybody is becoming very conscious about it in Australia.”
“Look at this!” She laughs to her colleague, pulling the wrapping off a cushion. It’s satiny, with exotic patterns. “We get so excited when they’re different.”
The shop makes a lovely place to visit on your trip to Nelson Bay. And once your eyes have seen quality, you might want to taste it at nearby Nero’s gelateria.
